Multiwavelength observations of N 66 in the SMC: unveiling photodissociation interfaces and star formation

چکیده
We present new observations of the major star– forming region N 66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud and of its surroundings, which add to those presented in Contursi et al. (2000, Paper I). High–sensitivity CO observations allowed the detection of molecular gas associated with the H ii region, for which a high–resolution image in [O iii ] λ 5007 is presented. We also present images in the v(1-0) S(1) line of H2 at 2.12 μm and in the adjacent continuum. This material reveals an interesting photodissociation region. We show that the molecular gas that has not yet been photodissociated by the UV radiation of the stars is in hot, dense clumps with a very small surface filling factor. We discovered several embedded stars or stellar associations, and suggest that three successive stellar generations have already taken place in less than 3 million years.

SAGE−SMC: Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution in the Tidally− Disrupted, Low−Metallicity Small Magellanic Cloud
The observable properties of galaxy evolution are largely driven by the life−cycle of baryonic matter: stars precipitate out of a complex, multi−phase interstellar medium; and eventually, evolved stellar populations return enriched material back to the ISM via stellar winds or supernova explosions. As demonstrated by the SAGE−LMC survey, comprehensive Spitzer imaging of a nearby galaxy provides...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملFormation interface detection using Gamma Ray log: A novel approach
There are two methods for identifying formation interface in oil wells: core analysis, which is a precise approach but costly and time consuming, and well logs analysis, which petrophysists perform, which is subjective and not completely reliable. In this paper, a novel coupled method was proposed to detect the formation interfaces using GR logs. Second approximation level (a2) of GR log gained...
متن کاملTelescope observations of three very young star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We present Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) broad band imagery and optical slitless spectroscopy of three young star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). MA 1796 and MG 2 were previously known as Planetary Nebulae, and observed as such within our Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey. With the HST spatial resolution, we show that they are instead H II regions, surrounding very...
متن کاملMillimeter dust continuum emission unveiling the true mass of giant molecular clouds in the Small Magellanic Cloud
Context. CO observations have been so far the best way to trace molecular gas in external galaxies, but in low metallicity environments the gas mass deduced could be largely underestimated due to enhanced photodissociation of the CO molecule. Large envelopes of H2 could therefore be missed by CO observations. Aims. At present, the kinematic information of CO data cubes are used to estimate viri...
